Restructuring And Extension Of The Albert Claveille High School / ARTUR Architectes Mandataire

This rehabilitation is a clear opportunity for a new deal and provides the chance to offer all users a new working and living environment. The architectural challenge is to create a core, re-orient the polarities of the school, harmonise a high school made of heterogeneous buildings. The entire restructuring of the teaching building (externat) and the addition of a school library on the restaurant’s terraced roof therefore allow students to find a coherence in its use. The coherence of the architectural design results from the use of white Trespa panels. The white facing of the teaching building becomes the scenic background for the white-striated homogenous block of pure volumes which hosts the school library and the restaurant on the schoolyard level.
The school library (Centre de Documentation et d’Information) reigns on a pedestal in the middle of the schoolyard. Built on the model of a peristyle room, it hosts the reading room in its centre. This superimposition, built from dry construction materials with a structure in galvanized , unifies the school library and the restaurant and gives to the whole the look of a white-striated homogenous block of pure volumes. The roofing rests upon a peripheral line of very thin galvanized posts, which encloses the central volume.

Finally, the floor has undergone a complete restructuring, through the creation of a concrete base and the integration of both stairs and access ramps; it sets the whole composition, prioritizes circulation, and leads naturally to the doors of the various buildings. To protect from the sunshine, the South-facing roof becomes gradually slimmer and ends up in a sizeable brim-like cantilever.
The Eastern and Western façades are protected from low-angled sun rays by perforated white vertical Trespa panels, running at right angles from the glass surface, mounted on pivots and linked together to an automated system. This system allows to control the building’s permeability to the sun’s rays for each façade, all the way to complete closure. In this ultimate position, the panels form a second skin 60cm from the façade. These vertical panels are also found at the lower level on the school restaurant’s façades.
The teaching building went through a rehabilitation process. A covering of white Trespa panels on the façade, which had been isolated beforehand, as well as a double cap of perforated white Trespa panels (Trespa panels that match the coverings and the sun protections of the library) were put in place in addition to the new layout of the inside volumes.
Efficiency requirements in terms of materials and construction standards, energy management, isolation, summer thermal comfort, low pollutant-emission and building site management have been reached.
Heating consumption is 45.8 kWh/m²/year (average for the buildings). Before the rehabilitation, this consumption was 96.8 kWh/m²/year. This new consumption level is the combined result of the isolation efficiency of the outer layer, and of the energy-saving system. The energy-saving system includes the existing gas-powered boiler room, low-temperature heaters, double-flow ventilation for the library, and highly energy-efficient lamps.
The strong thermal inertia combined with suitable solar protection (overhanging roof and sun screens) and a nightly over-ventilation (doubled the normal ventilation flow) ensure an optimal thermal comfort during the summer.
The building site also followed the recommendations of the « low-pollution building site » charter.

Situated in ‘la Joliette’, between the docks and l’avenue de Dunkerque, the project is the first building in a new generation of buildings, which undertake the renewal of the ‘Euro Méditerranée’ district.

The Coeur Méditerranée building is organised round a U-shaped plan and consists of an Ibis Hotel to the south wing, a Suite Hotel to the north wing, office and commercial space on the ground floor and an underground parking providing 387 parking spaces. The building skin is wrapped around the face of the building like a continuous ribbon, which is pierced on the south facing facades by a trapezoidal motif that evokes the maritime character of the town. The north facing facades are for the most part glazed and each bedroom contains a covered loggia with a sea view. A large covered entrance links l’avenue de Dunkerque with an internal garden and allows pedestrians to freely cross the building to go down to the Docks behind. This edifice, with its pure lines is characterised by the smooth white of the and the softness of its material.

Its architecture assumes the new direction sought by the town of Marseille with regards to sustainable materials and environmental architecture.

Parking’s presence of the and urban space in front of the Forum Jacques Prevert in Carros, allows a better management of the car parks which blocked the environment of this part of the city center of Carros. We wished to set up the architectural and urban elements which give viability to this project of evacuation of the traffic, especially positioning the parking lot as entity registered in the landscape.

The first axis developed in the project is the one of the management of the landscape and the space by optimizing the space of the site. The site presents main advantages that are its slope, and a wide zone with lot of trees. This axis of development passes by scale’s control of landscape’s parking.

The second axis consists in finding district’s scale, in taking up the site, in registering an identity of the place in agreement with its environment. Bring to the foreground the qualities existing in the site by asserting at the same time its respect for the place, while displaying as determinedly contemporary architecture.

Contemporary architecture here to Carros means architecture in adequacy with the technicality necessary for the program while proposing one urban space on district’s scale in adequacy with the current urban practices. Organize the public place planned so as to make it play its role of urban pole capable of revaluing the district and of working as continuation.

Landscape’s implementation

Parking implementation’s project is also a landscape project. The city is a landscape, a juxtaposition of socioeconomic functions and wills of embellishment, as much for the simple delight of the life in urban zones as for the economic and social development of the urbanized sectors. The creation of parking and the arrangements which surround it is a founding act of a public places politic, thought for the local resident as for the user of the public places. A real urban place can be developed here, offering space public qualities appropriate for the place, associated with a vast green space protecting natural site qualities. This development will be a link between entities which, until now, remained juxtaposed.

The inscription in the landscape, by the material used, allowed a putting in a safe place of people towards the various flows, by a work on the limits and answers an appropriate scale. To strengthen our will of soft and environment-friendly insertion, the work on the material appeared to us as fundamental. This wooden unique skin answers this will.

The project intends to join in the time by taking into account a sustainable development which becomes an essential prerequisite in any construction today. Our intervention takes into account the program, but also, the architectural flexibility, the environmental protection, the public character of the building.
