Bled is considered one of the most important and beautiful scenes of the largest rowing events. In 2011, it will also host the World Rowing Championships, where spectators will cheer for the rowers from new stands in the finish line area. The renovation of the rowing centre was funded by the European Regional Development Fund.
basement plan
Viewing platforms belong to a group of utility buildings, where the function primarily characterizes the appearance. Given the fact that in the context of the entire rowing centre the stands are placed directly on the lake shore, an upgrade of the formal design into the intertwining of built and natural is the key.

The stands consist of two parts: the upper part viewing platform and bottom part with public toilets, accessible from the promenade street nearby. The stands part is divided into an open area with seats and a closed area, designated to commentators, the VIP room etc.

The building is constructed within a large area in which various buildings of the Biotechnical Faculty are positioned as pavilions among groves of fruit trees. The building is a functional and conceptual continuation of the existing faculty complex.

It houses a large representative lecture hall, the dean’s office and central library.

In spite of the poor construction state of the existing building, it is the only context of design and organization the new building design could relate to.

In accordance with the above, all communication passages in the new building are connected to hallways in the existing building.

The main entrance is designed from the western side, combining with the existing building entrance to create a large entry platform with benches. The entry platform serves to functionally and perceptively combine two dislocated entries into a unified whole.

The connection to the existing building is also obvious at the level of façade design, as it resumes the composition scheme of the existing building. The façade dynamics reflect the functional layout of internal premises and load bearing construction.

The library, acting as the “house of learning” is symbolically placed above the main entrance. As the sanctuary of all written knowledge of the faculty, the library has a dominant position both in the direction of the main entrance and in the direction of the main hall.

Special attention is paid to orientation of the halls that never end as “blind alleys”. They are rather closed by glass walls that allow users a view into the surroundings.

The project is located in the prominent green residential area of Ljubljana just on the edge of city centre. The main request was to develop 100 quality housing units with terraces surrounded by green.

3 Islands- elevated terraced villas

The concept proposes three enclosed islands starting from layout of typical house with garden in the area.

Apartment village is formed from individual houses with gardens and furthermore imposed on top of each other. In this way, green parterre is elevated on the upper floors.
The islands are hexagonal shape, therefore there is no guidance, but floating in space.
typical floor plan
Housing units are arranged in 4 floors with inserted apartment volumes in between slabs.
The arrangement creates terraces between volumes and possibility for apartments to be opened on three or four sides.
sustainable section
The height of the islands lowers towards the south creating terraces and therefore offers light, views and sun to the living units.
Green area around buildings is formed with small hill-islands with threes and greenery.

Since apartments have external entrances and are oriented on three or four sides they actually work like one family house with attached garden, lifted on different levels. Each family house unit has cross ventilated airy space and sun exposure.
Materials are wood, glass and concrete. Extensive green will be pre-planted on terrace edges.
